There is NO 51% attack.

Why...

1. Law - a miner doing this is an easy target for criminal action and can easily be taken to task in both Tort and contract.

Miners have a HUGE investment. 100s of millions of USD at scale or MORE

2. Economic incentives - if the miner does this, they lower the profitability of the very investment they have a long term interest in building.

Bitcoin is NOT at all about cryptographic protections - it is NOT even encrypted.

It is an economic incentive system.

Miners do not do 51% attacks on Bitcoin as it is not economically viable for them to.

This is also why ONLY one Bitcoin can exist (only one Blockchain) and only ever one protocol.

Ethereum Classic said that the attacks against their chain were most likely Selfish Mining attacks.

Indeed, selfish mining can be used to reduce the cost of a double-spend attack. The trade-off is that the attacker needs less hashpower, but sacrifices some success probability.

Given what I've heard from others, I suspect this was not SM, but only a careful post-mortem can tell.
